Why enroll in #EmTechMOOC?
From reading eBooks for leisure to collaborating online to create group reports, we use technology daily. As a result of technology's central role in our lives, becoming comfortable with various tools is central to our continuing growth, both personally and professionally. In fact, for most of us, mastering established and emerging technology tools is an important part of being successful, whether in a classroom or on the job. However, while modern life revolves around the daily use of technology, many of us are not always adept at identifying the most useful technology tool for a particular project or situation. Then, when we come across a promising tool, we often are unsure about how to use it.
In #EmTechMOOC, you will learn how to employ lifelong learning strategies while being introduced to both well established and emerging technology tools. You will then have the opportunity to practice with them. By the end of the course, you will have created an ePortfolio that demonstrates your competency with a variety of useful tools, which can be integrated into your personal, academic, and professional work. The criteria that your final ePortfolio will be evaluated on the peer-review activity in the final module of this course is found in the #EmTechMOOC ePortfolio rubric: http://bit.ly/EmTechMOOCRubric
The greatest reward for participating in this course is learning more about how to be independent learner and also how to use technology tools to enhance your life.

What is the difference between #EmTechMOOC & EmTechWIKI?
The complete title of this course is, “Exploring Emerging Technologies for Lifelong Learning and Success (MOOC).” An abbreviated form we will use within the course content is #EmTechMOOC. This is also our social media hashtag. A hashtag is simply a term used within a message to identify a keyword or topic of interest and help to categorize and track topics and to search for related information.
In this course, we highlight freely available tools and resources. To share information about the continually changing technologies that are available, we have built a socially-curated discovery engine to search for tools, websites, mobile apps, tutorials, and resources, which is called EmTechWIKI ( http://suny.edu/emtech ). We will direct you to this resource to help you find tools to complete the Discovery Activities in each of the modules.
EmTechWIKI is a collaborative space where anyone is able to make edits and changes to help us keep the many tools and resources available current and up-to-date. Because technology changes so rapidly, we will rely on the wisdom of the crowd to share new tools and point out when a technology is no longer the recommended option. There is additional information about the ability to make changes in the help pages within the wiki.
