They are made by volunteers and staff, and they are very I would say,
we count on the proximities to the victim.
So, fundamental networks of our societies, that's why we thought it was an important
aspect to be take into these module on health getting danger.
So, let's discuss with Sylvia, and
thank you very much for joining us on this lesson.
Please, Sylvia, let's discuss about how the Kenya Red Cross Society
is strengthened in respect to full health care.
Two main pillars which is the auxiliary role, mandate and then, a safer access.
Can you elaborate more on that please?
>> Thank you very much.
I'm [INAUDIBLE] for the Kenya Red Cross, which is [INAUDIBLE] given to me,
all the Red Crosses across the globe in their countries like, their government.
And this means that the Red Cross is taking place by an active tenement and
is able to compliment the services of the national authorities depending on how
the structure of the government is.
There are some government that have got federal system,
others have got what we call the county system,
like Kenya currently has the [INAUDIBLE] of the National government system.
So you have the Red Cross which is available to National [INAUDIBLE]
government and of generally,
in simple ways means complimenting the government efforts and
looking into how to be sure the citizens of the country access in services.
And especially during emergencies which could be natural disasters or
conflicts or any other form of an emergency that might occur.
So at Kenya Red Cross, we enjoy this status and
we are able to then provide services in line with government guidelines but
at the end, they are also with our independence,
we are still able to work not really being given instructions by government and such,
but still wanting to get government in colaboration with [INAUDIBLE] services.
And from a health perspective, future [INAUDIBLE] including Kenya,
the government is the one that sponsor major, major health services.
So when there is an emergency, if you are not working in a scale under
the government, it becomes really difficult for you to provide the services.
There are recruit agents which stay there when there's calamity and
the government that provide the health care services.
>> Excellent, so as understood also,
you are working in order to facilitate taxes to health staff,
ambulances, volunteers to an area where health services is needed,
through the safer access framework.
Could you elaborate more on that as well?
Thanks.
>> Thank you, my Safer Access framework basically advocates for
ensuring the safety of the health line provider of emergency services.
And also ensuring that they are giving the services, they are protected facilities,
the service, but I do, we go by clinics, [INAUDIBLE] structured facilities.
These are also protected from harm, either from military attacks or
from bandit attacks or from any other fighting or of the company or
attack that would occur in the infrastructure and
[INAUDIBLE] providing health care services.
So, what we do as a Red Cross, possible is we have to do
the best which is ensuring that our staff, our women here.
And all the patients that work here [INAUDIBLE] success in terms of
ensuring that there's the respect of the Red Cross for
Red [INAUDIBLE] in that country, but also looking at how a major Geneva
convention that protect the health care system and health infrastructure.
And a respect for a very important aspect for, like the emblem, [INAUDIBLE] and
dispute are [INAUDIBLE] to Red Cross but also become of our key aspect,
including goverment because at times, some of the governments agencies may
not understand the importance of the emblem point.
So you go out and you need to make sure that the emblem, they are protected,
went to [INAUDIBLE] and when there is an emergency, say for example a conflict and
you have to then invke the universal emblem, then we have the limit
of respecting you, and we also have the voluntary respect for them.
And the, there are recruits to be able to access even the areas where at
times some of the other agencies can not.
>> Yeah, no, I know, thanks thanks Sylvia,
I know that the Kenya Red Cross is very active and have been very active in
the past in recent past also in promoting their respect for them and for the staff,
the medical staff in situation of emergency.
Final words what we, what would be your three main messages that you will
deliver to professionals, health professionals, those who were deployed
in field in difficult environments, in order to take in consideration,
what is the role of national society in this environment?
And how they can solicitate if needed in the national
society in improving the respect for health care in this environment?
>> I think in correlation number one would be for the professionals to understand
the role of the National society, or the Red Cross in their country.
Whether it's Red Cross, Red whatever, name that would be used for
the National society in their country from to understand the importance of being
engaged with the Red Cross.
And especially when it comes to [INAUDIBLE] success and
protection of their all, of themselves and they're providing services and also,
to understand the role of [INAUDIBLE] the emblem,
when it comes to protection of health care infrastructure and the personnel.
And also advise that different nation can be involve,
in the Red Cross as professional, you can either do it as a volunteer.
Some of the Red Crosses are well established,
you can be employed as a staff.
It actually gives you a better platform to be able to understand,
what the Red Cross does and be involved in the Red Cross in a more active manner.
But also I was advised the ones to [INAUDIBLE] government to really support
the Red Crosses in their country, because Red Crosses, come in very handy in terms
of emergency and especially in conflicts and difficult situations.
It is normally the Red Cross, [INAUDIBLE] community owned and
the community would normally trust the Red Cross.
With the Red Cross [INAUDIBLE] supports the government level, so
the government should really support [INAUDIBLE].
>> Excellent, thank you very much, Sylvia.
Thank you very much for your contribution.
I know that you are on daily basis engaged on this work and
I hope the learners has enjoyed as I did on your contribution and
testimony on this matter.
Thank you very much.
