Welcome to this lecture on the future use and role of standards,
and now we are going to look into connected cars.
First, again we would like you to have a more,
some more feeling for what standards mean in the future,
and how are they going to be used.
But with cars let's say that the development
is the farthest when we are looking back at the privacy,
as I told you a few minutes ago or in the other lecture I told you,
and now we are going to see what connected cars,
and standardization has been doing on.
First, what is very important is that the development of
what we now call connected cars already started in the early 1990's.
Why? Because at that moment there was a development,
and developments going on,
on Intelligent Transport Systems,
namely smart infrastructure,
with all type of condensators on the road and things like that,
so to be able to guide the traffic.
Also known as green waves for instance in some countries;
to guide the traffic a bit more efficiently through, over the roads.
On the other hand, already in the end of the 1990's,
the beginning of the century,
On Board Diagnostic systems came, OBD,
which enabled car makers,
but also dealers to see and look inside of the car.
What happened on, and what the status was of different parts, and things like that.
Then about 10 years ago,
this OBD systems allowed to be
connected to the telecommunications, mobile telecommunications network.
In the beginning that was only used by
very high-end car makers like Mercedes or Audi or Chrysler,
so the high-end cars were trusted with these type of systems
that gave the On Board Diagnostics back to a network or to a data center.
From that developed the so-called within the European Union the ecosystem.
So, that when airbags for instance exploded,
then automatically the car will make a call to the emergency services,
and now let's say over the last four or five years standardization
and development of connected cars has come to a real high.
Everybody is taking this into account, and working on it,
but in reality the development started already more than 25 years ago.
So, here you see a lot of these On Board Diagnostics systems,
all type of different.
In the beginning they were connected with cables,
and now you can use them by using Bluetooth or Zigbee or some type of other connections.
So, that you can see your diagnostics on the car through an app on your mobile phone.
It can be made or put into almost any car,
as I show you here.
