Welcome to the first course in the Leadership Development specialization. This specialization consists of three courses, Awareness, Managing Relationships and Action Planning. The first course is entitled Self Awareness and consists of five modules. The five modules in this course, follow the pipelines in the Diagram. The first one is the Overview of Leadership. The second one, the Engineering Profession. Third, Self Assessment Tools. Fourth, Managing Stress and finally, Analytical and Creative Problem Solving. You can expect each module in this course to take about a week. That will include the video lessons, the readings and any supplemental assignments. Each module will end with a graded quiz. At the end of the course we do have a written peer reviewed assignment, but we'll talk more about that later on. I'd like to begin and end each module with a personal observation about leadership. So let's begin with today's observation. There's a linkage of this particular observation to the motivation to lead topics that we're going to talk about in module four. So, today's observation is that understanding why you want to lead is an important first milestone on your journey to effective leadership. Our objectives in this lesson are to first understand the RCEL leadership framework. Within that, we'll talked a little bit about a technique called Bloom's Taxonomy and we'll begin to introduced some self-assessment tools. We'll talk some about journaling, establishing a leadership journal that you can use on your leadership journal. We'll introduce the concept of goal setting as a way of insuring that you have an action plan to achieve success. We'll then end this particular module with a personal greeting exercise, which will be a tool that you can use as you network with others.
