Now let's begin our discussion of power and influence by defining our terms. Power is the ability to exert force on others to accomplish certain actions or behaviors. Many times, this takes the forms of threats for intimidation, and as such, can represent an abusive power. We're more accustomed to seeing power used as the ability to direct the behavior of others to accomplish the goals of the organization. In this form, it may or may not be abusive. So what, then, is influence? Influence is the ability to have an effect on the outcome. Either on the development of others, their behavior, or events themselves. So why is power and influence important? Well, first of all, having power allows us to act in ways that benefit others and ourselves, and as a result, the entire organization. We can be stronger advocates for ourselves in getting those things that we need to accomplish our goals and to achieve our aspirations. We can get our ideas recognized. Not only recognized, but implemented in the organization. We can influence decisions in positive ways, in ways that benefit our team, ourselves, and the organization. We can be recognized by key people. A fundamental element of success is that recognition that you receive from others that acknowledge your skills, expertise and abilities. Being able to be a strong advocate for yourself and having that power and influence will allow you to get the resources that are essentially important to you to accomplish your goals. And as such, with your alignment of goals for the good of the organization, to achieve the overall organizational goals. We define political competence as having the ability to get your ideas acted upon when others can’t get them. As I said earlier, power and influence in other cultures do have a negative connotation. However, here, we view power and influence in a positive way, so that when it is used appropriately, it can help us accomplish not only our goals but those of the organization.
