[MUSIC] So Professor Wang, I was going through some literature about China and I realized that Chinese people seem to like the number 8 a lot because as far as I know, the Beijing Olympics was held on August 8th, 2008, 8 minutes after 8 PM after 8 seconds after 8 PM and I wonder why you like the number 8 so much. >> This is because the word 8, ba sounds similar to the word fa, which means prosper in Chinese. Actually people also like number 9, jiu, because it's the biggest cardinal number, and also it's the homophone for the word jiu, which means long-lasting. >> Okay, okay. Is it true that Chinese people don't like the number four, because it's similar to death? >> Yes, no we don't like that, because you know that in many East Asian countries, some buildings don't have a fourth floor just like in the West, some buildings don't have a 13th floor. >> Yeah I get that. In my research as well I came across a few dates that seem to have some importance to most business owners. They are January, the 18th, November, the 18th and November 11th. They're not festival dates, I wondered why they were so important. >> It's actually number one which is yi in Chinese, it can also be pronounced as yao. And yao sounds similar to the word yao, which means to become or to want. So if you put one and eight together, it means to become rich. So that's why all those business owners like it, especially those in E business. Actually they have very big promotions or sales on those days. >> Okay, okay. But that explains number 1 and 8, but what about November 11th because that's all 1. >> So if I have four 1s together, so 1, 1, 1, 1, then it becomes the symbol of being single, or solitude. So actually, unofficially, this is considered the day for single people. >> Okay, the day for single people. That's a day I would love to celebrate, it would be good festival for me. >> Yeah it's good for you.
