Lots of people are convinced that the best way to build a future is to use current mindsets and new technology. And they think, they make a hypothesis, those two together will build a future. No. This is not the way it works. If you really want to build the future you need new mindsets and I will try to develop this through lots of examples. Let's take the first one. You see this picture? It's an arrow, a mechanical arrow. Now this is 60 years old and lots of cars were equipped with arrows like that. What's this, what's this? It's the, the wrong way to make progress. And how did it happen? People looked at this, the situation. The driver had to get out with the arm to show the way of their wish to make a turn. And we, if you keep the same mindset. And you pull some technology. You're going to have this. A mechanical arrow of a mechanical arm. A flipping light is a much more efficient way to show you want to turn. But it's not like a mechanical arm. It has nothing to do with the arm. It's a new mindset. Let's go back in what I want to do. I want to show. I want to turn. So you see this is a good example, and you have lots of examples like that. The other one is this. It's a very old picture. It's one of the first attempts to build a plane. It never flew. Why? Because engineers in this particular case want to imitate the bird with moving wings like this. If you look at a plane wings don't move. A plane fly for completely different reason. So again, man succeeded in flying with plane when they stopped looking at the birds, a new mindset. The third example still from transportation area. Look at this boat. It's a boat which was used to bring the Obelisk from Luxor in Egypt to Place de la Concorde here in Paris. And so, it's 1820, '25, something like that. What's the strange thing with the boat? It's hybrid. Look you have sailing and you also have wheel. You have an engine, an engine and you have sail. It's hybrid. Imagine people looking at the boat for the first time. You can use two different mindsets. If the main mindset is a sailboat, you can see this as a sailboat. With an engine, well nice to have when there is no wind. With another mindset, this is a steamboat. But let's keep the sail when the, the engine is broken. So, that's important. You can see the same thing in front of you, with two different mindsets. If you are oriented to the future, you have the new mindset. You know the future is made of steamboat. And even if you have sail, you see a steam boat, which was not the case for men, for people oriented into the past. They still see a sail boat. And so many examples. My last one in this transportation category is my favorite. Look at this. It's a coach. Very old coach for very first train. Look carefully. The way the coach was designed. It's made of three stage coach. Before the train people have to move with like coaches carried by horses. Diligence stage coach. And how was the stage coach designed? Two doors and two danks face to face, that was. And in this example, you see that the mindset, even with the, the train, the mindset was still the mindset of the stagecoach. And it's an incredible example. That's why coaches from the first generation have so many doors. Because the mindset was the diligence. And of course this is not the way to do it. So the, the equation is not, current mindset plus technology equal to the future. No, no, the equation is, okay, now that the technology exists, what are we going to do? Let's move to energy. Let's move to energy. Look at this one. It's a sewing machine. What's the difference between the two? The second has some electricity. But you, you realize that the quote electric machine is simply a classic non-electric plus an engine, of an electric engine, which is not the best way to organize an electric sewing machine. And this is true for calculating machine. This is true for lots of machines. People in the first attempt, they just take the present, the current machine, and they add an engine. You had the calculating machine. You had to move [INAUDIBLE] your arm. Then, somebody puts an engine, it comes automatically. But that's not the way to use electricity. So, this is true in transportation, this is true in electricity. Look at this one. [COUGH] Of the, the oil lamp, the oil lamp. It's again fascinating. When people discover oil, what was the first use? To burn it. Because the mindset was the same. Coal, you can only do one thing with coal: to burn it. So oil was discovered, and they used the same mindset, they burned the oil to make oil lamp and things like that. The engine for a car, for example, requires a new mindset. Hey, with oil, I can do something I couldn't do with coal. To make explosions and to have the engine, et cetera, et cetera. You have that everywhere. Now, we are with information. But, with information, it's exactly the same. I remembered the first websites 30 years ago. The first website of companies. It was cut and paste of the annual report. People used to have annual reports and it was put like that on the website. And it was completely boring. Of course, a website is not a copy paste of the annual report. Is what can I do with internet to, I don't know, to transmit information about, about my company. It's through everything. The, the first use of a computer was to calculate. Because it was in the category calculating machine. Look what you can do with, with the computer. So what's the message behind? The message behind is we can not think with mindsets, okay. New technology is here. It's a challenge for you. How to take the most of the new technology. One part of the answer is forget about the current mindset. One last example for this video, the press, the press. My generation grew in the paper, of course. Newspaper, books, et cetera. So when we enter, you enter. First the television. Look what happened. What's the mindset when you read a newspaper? Very simple. A mindset is always simplification. We saw that last time. So, what was the mindset? Information goes from the newspaper into my head. That was the mindset. So we enter the world of television with the same mindset, convince information came from the television to here. No, no. Yes, yes and ye, yes and no. Somehow, we still have information from the television but we can also say the television is looking at us. It was the, the way that assess the audios, et cetera. With Google, it's even more serious. Why? Because we still have the mindset. The information comes from the screen, goes to my mind. Mm-hm. Mostly the information comes from you and goes to Google when you click, when you click you provide information so you have to rethink the whole relationship between an information provider. Because if it's Google, because the mindset is not the one what's used for a, a newspaper. And if you go for for the press, you can go very far. You can imagine 100% of the modern newspaper, completely. Because if you take the sum of the clicks, you can know what happen in the world. Imagine in southern Italy there are lots of clicks about I don't know rabbit. But, you just notice lots of clicks about rabbits in southern Italy. You can organize a system that send a message to journalists, who wants to write a paper on rabbits in southern Italy. You don't do anything. So let people submit papers. You can send the papers to advertisers, who want to sponsor this article, etc, etc. So in the end you have a 100% automatic newspaper. So this is a good example. We will take the most of technology if we develop together new mindset with lots of creativity, and that comes later.
