Hello. And a very warm welcome to our first module, Introduction to International Organizations. My name is Julian Fleet. I have a background in Law and in Public Health. I began my 25 year career in the United Nations, in the UN refugee agency, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, or UNHCR, where I worked both in the field, sometimes in remote locations, and at its headquarters in Geneva. I've worked also for the UN Development Programme, UNDP, for a Public-Private Partnership on malaria at the World Health Organization. And most recently, for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS, where I served in various positions relating to human rights, law, policy, as well as management and administration. After concluding my career with the UN, I had the privilege to serve as a Senior Advisor to the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, IFRC, which is the largest humanitarian network in the world. You are no doubt all familiar with your national and local Red Cross, or Red Crescent Societies, and the extraordinary often heroic work of their staff, and millions of volunteers. Since January 2016, I've been working as permanent observer and head of delegation, representing the International Development Law Organisation, IDLO, here in Geneva. IDLO is an intergovernmental organization outside the United Nations based in Rome, and the only intergovernmental organization exclusively devoted to promoting the rule of law and access to justice. But enough introductions. Let's turn now to the work of this University of Geneva, International Organizations online course.
