In this problem, we're going to look at the IUPAC name for N2O. The first thing we have to decide is whether this is a molecular compound, or an ionic compound. Notice that the two elements in the compound, nitrogen and oxygen, are both non-metals. So we know this is going to be a molecular compound. And in that case, we're actually going to use our prefixes, to name the compound. So, we see we have a subscript of two for nitrogen. So, we're going to need to use the prefix, di. We leave the name of the first element as is, no changes to that. So, dinitrogen. For the second, element, we see that it's oxygen. We're going to change the ending to d e. We see that there's only one oxygen, and so, we have to put the prefix in mono. So, we have dinitrogen monoxide. Remember, that we can only omit the mono when it's the first element, that has the subscript of one.
