Introduction to Capstone

The Newborn Baby Care Capstone- Case Studies is your opportunity to take what you have learned and synthesize, integrate, and apply what you know to a series of case studies. Interacting with these real-life scenarios will help you retain the specialization content and be ready to put it into practice in your own care-providing environment. Together we have experienced key moments of the courses, which we will now apply through the lens of case studies. We will begin with addressing jaundice and performing screenings and assessments covered in Course 1. From there we will consider case studies for both heart and lung health representing Course 2. Then we will enter new territory, the first doctor’s visit once baby has gone home. Here you will bring together elements from Courses 3 and 4, assessing baby and also main care providers. No matter what capacity you do or will provide newborn baby care, the experience of this final capstone course will positively impact your understanding and ability to put that understanding into practice. The newborns, families, and other care providers you engage with will benefit greatly from your efforts....

The Newborn Assessment: Heart Health

Congenital heart diseases, that is, malformations of the heart that begin in fetal life and are present at birth, are some of the most common congenital anomalies. One percent of all children are born with cardiac anomalies. Of those, about 25% have critical congenital heart disease, heart disease that requires intervention during the first month of life in order to avoid death or disability. In the CCHD screening lectures from Course I, CCHD from Course 2 and its cases, you were introduced to the concept of congenital heart disease, when to think about it and how to diagnose it. These are important skills to master, as these congenital problems, when not treated, can result in disability and even death for your young patients. In this capstone module, you will be presented with two cases, one extensive, the other brief. These are meant to represent the range of heart disease that you may encounter in practice. You will be asked to evaluate these cases in several ways....
