B. Joseph Guglielmo, PharmD, is a pharmacist, clinical scientist, teacher, and international expert in the evidence-based use of antimicrobials to treat infections. He has served as dean of the UCSF School of Pharmacy since April 2013, where he holds the Troy C. Daniels Distinguished Professorship in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Guglielmo is also a professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, which he chaired from 2006 until he was named dean, and serves as the associate director of pharmaceutical services in the UCSF Medical Center.

As chair, Guglielmo oversaw a 40 percent increase in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy’s faculty research funding from 2006 to 2012, including grants from the National Institutes of Health. He created the Department of Clinical Pharmacy Medication Outcomes Center in 2007 toward improved medication use in the UCSF Medical Center. In the 1980s he established the UCSF Medical Center Antimicrobial Stewardship Program toward the safe, effective use of antibiotics.

He practices in the UCSF Medical Center, where he is an infectious diseases pharmacist supporting the UCSF Medical Center Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and serving on the Infectious Diseases Consult Service team.

Guglielmo is the author of more than 110 peer-reviewed papers, the majority related to anti-infective agents. He is the long-term editor of Applied Therapeutics: The Clinical Use of Drugs and the Handbook of Applied Therapeutics.
