Joseph L. Hellerstein a Senior Data Science Fellow and Research Scientist with the UW eScience Institute. His major projects involve metagenomics, control theoretic approaches to gene networks, and large scale simulations of chemical and biological systems. He has developed and taught Molecular Biology for Computer Scientists, a course that provides computer scientists with the background to do data science in molecular biology. Dr. Hellerstein was previously a Software Engineering Manager with Google Inc. in Seattle, a Principal Architect at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington and a Senior Manager at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, New York. Dr. Hellerstein received the PhD in computer science from the University of California at Los Angeles.
