Bio

Carol Muller is a South African born Professor of Music at the University of Pennsylvania. She has had grants from the National Research Foundation (South Africa) a fellowship funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and a variety of research and teaching grants from the University of Pennsylvania. Muller has published widely on South African music at home and abroad. Her books include Rituals of Fertility and the Sacrifice of Desire: Nazarite Women's Performance in South Africa (Chicago with CD Rom); Focus: South African Music (Routledge with CD); Shembe Hymns (Univ. of KwaZulu Natal, with CD) and with jazz singer Sathima Bea Benjamin, Musical Echoes: South African Women Thinking in Jazz. She is currently writing a book, Musically Connected (Oxford) that will be used for future iterations of this class. Muller is actively engaged in online learning at the University of Pennsylvania, where she teaches courses for credit like this one. And she takes students to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa every summer for credit! She has done pioneering work in academically based community service research and teaching - see www.sas.upenn.edu/music/westphillymusic - and her graduate students are undertaking research and teaching all over the world. Muller learnt to gumboot dance in the townships of KwaZulu Natal in the 1980s in South Africa. She occasionally teaches this skill to her students at Penn.
