Jerker Liljestrand

Bio

Jerker Liljestrand is an obstetrician-gynecologist who in 1978 went to work in Mozambique for a few years. Back in Sweden, his research training and PhD came to focus on area-based studies of maternal health in different parts of Mozambique. After 20 years of clinical work, including midwifery training, in 1992 he went over full time to teaching, research and planning of sexual and reproductive health. During 1997-99 he was Chief of maternal-newborn health/Safe Motherhood at WHO, Geneva, and 2000-2002 he worked with reproductive health at the World Bank as lead health specialist. In 2002-2007 and again from 2014 he is co-leader of a Sida-sponsored training program in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights at Lund University. Areas of interest include STI, HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence, adolescent reproductive health, and sexual health. He is a member of the international board of IPAS. Since 2008, he lives in Cambodia where he works with maternal-newborn health and family planning issues, within a health systems strengthening perspective.
