Dr Aravind Vijayaraghavan

Bio

Aravind Vijayaraghavan is a Lecturer in Nanomaterials in the School of Materials at the University of Manchester. He was born in Chennai, India and received his B.Tech. (in 2000) from the Indian Institute of Technology Chennai. He subsequently obtained an M.Eng. (in 2002) and Ph.D. (in 2005) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA. He has previously held positions as senior post-doctoral associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA and an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.

Aravind leads the Nano-functional Materials research group at the University of Manchester, which includes a team of post-doctoral researchers and undergraduate, masters and doctoral students. His research primarily covers the production, properties and applications of graphene and 2-d materials, particularly in sensors, composite materials and bio-medical systems. He has published over 50 research papers in international peer reviewed journals and given over 50 presentations at international conferences. He is also an active science communicator, and was awarded the Josh Award for Innovation in Science Communication in 2013. He has also been delivering a series of public lectures on Graphene since 2011 (over 30 so far) titled Graphene: Unexpected Science in a Pencil Line.
